Specific Fee Information for Research

on California Law

California Statutes and Codes

The table immediately following provides an overview of the general fee range for researching a single California legislative enactment. When the scope of the research includes reviewing all information sources the fee will tend to come in at the top end of the range.  If you only need the primary substantive documents the fee will tend to be at the bottom of the range.  See below for more detailed discussion of these research options.   Other factors influencing the actual fee include the year of the legislation and the number of legislative enactments we are looking at in any one project.

California Code of Regulations

California Regulations are often researched in a two-step process, due to the lack of control we have over access to documents within agency rulemaking files.  Step one typically takes two to four business days, during which time we gather all readily available materials. We typically bill between $75 and $300 for step one, depending on the subject matter and scope of the request. As our report on Step one typically will arrive in your office before we have invested much time in Step two, you may terminate the project after step one is completed if you already have sufficient information for your purposes.  Step two involves obtaining access to the agency rulemaking file, which in some cases may only take a couple days, but in other cases may take weeks. We bill between $200 and $400 per rulemaking file for step two, again depending on the subject matter and scope of your project. You also should keep in mind that agency rulemaking files are often very voluminous, so photocopy expense can be a significant additional expense.

California Rules of Court

Researching California Rules of Court is similar, in process, to researching California Regulations. Generally research on Court rules will be quoted following the same guidelines as set forth for Regulations.

California Rules of Professional Conduct

Rules of Professional Conduct are treated, for fee quote purposes, as a California Statute.
